Up until summer 2011, The Island was a huge expansive project incorporating a fire station, the police head quarters and a courtyard complete with fire tower. It hosted spectacular 1000 capacity events and was run by volunteers and affiliates ofArtspace Lifespace and The Invisible Circus. The Invisible Circus was pioneer on large site specific circus show and one of their biggest successes has been Carnyville which has influenced the performance scene in Bristol ever since.
Artspace Lifespace is an artist led initiative that recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties into thriving active creative resources. We work in partnership with building owners, property developers and the local community to secure and re-use interesting, unusual and often difficult spaces as vibrant multi-use art venues.
"As a company we have found Artspace Lifespace dedicated, passionate and hard working."Darren Sheward - Urban Creation
Now the old firestation has been sold to our new neighbours The Creative Youth Network who has transformed it into a fantastic youth centre with a kitted out venue, café, music, and dance studios plus a range of on site advice, info and support for young people. For more info about that, visit: www.creativeyouthnetwork.org.uk/our-places/the-station-bristol.html
The old Police Station is now The Island, a multi use arts facility with various spaces and a wide range of activities of all artistic disciplines. It's a purely self funded project and has developed links with many local art organisations and contributed to the regeneration of the heart of Bristol City Centre.
